“If someone proposed combining measures of height, weight, diet, and exercise into a single number or mark to represent a person’s physical condition, we would consider it laughable. How could the combination of such diverse measures yield anything meaningful? Yet every day, teachers combine equally diverse measures of student’s performance in school into a hodgepodge grade that is just as confounded and impossible to interpret as a physical condition grade that combined height, weight, diet, and exercise - and no one questions it.”

Short magical realist fictional story “Gem Pockets” debuts in Vertigo Quarterly: Magenta, in comics shops tomorrow, 7/30. I wrote it, and Minneapolis’s Dawson Walker drew it. Thanks to Dawson for the lovely job he did, and to Greg Lockard for offering me the slot in the book. As for originally scheduled artist Emily Partridge, I definitely hope we can work together sometime. We just ended up having scheduling conflicts.

I absolutely loved drawing this comic, Annie Mok is an incredible writer and I really enjoyed working with her in creating something very unique and personal. There are some incredible artists and writers in this anthology and you should definitely check it out!  heyanniemok:

Lines for this were done by Dawson, I slapped some fun colors on there.  For sale at DashCon this weekend, like everything I’ve been posting here.

Black jeans, dykes, and dinosaurs / a panel from “Gem Pockets” drawn by Dawson Walker // written by me // in Vertigo Quarterly: Magenta (of the CMYK series), out July 30.

heyanniemok:

Hi! Here are Dawson Walker's first sketches of Suzy & Tiff from “Gem Pockets,” our story in Vertigo's CMYK: Magenta anthology. I just finished writing final dialog over Dawson’s roughs, to be lettered by John Workman, who is really nice and good as well as the sometime letterer and editor of someone you might have heard of called Moebius. Greg Lockard edited.
(I announced earlier that Emily Partridge would be drawing this story, and sadly, we had a scheduling conflict.)
CMYK is a quarterly series, with Cyan that came out in spring. Yellow debuts in fall, and Black in winter.
To the person who said that me & Emily Carroll’s Vertigo story "This Witch’s Work" gave her physical pain: this one gives you a break! And me, too. It’s hecka cute.
It’s 80 pages and eight dollars, out in a month, July 30. Here’s the solicitation info if you wanna order it from your local comics shop.

I’m doing work for Vertigo and Annie Mok! They’re both wonderful.  heyanniemok:
